چکیده

We briefly review X-ray studies of ionized AGN outflows and high-redshift AGN. We discuss recent progress with Chandra and XMMNewton as well as prospects and requirements for future X-ray missions.

UV and X-ray Observations of Mass Outflows in AGN

More than half of all low-redshift AGN exhibit UV and X-ray absorption by highly ionized gas. The observed UV and X-ray absorption lines are almost always blue-shifted at velocities of hundreds of km/s, indicating that the absorbing gas is outflowing from the active nucleus. In some cases the inferred mass flux rivals the Eddington limit of the central black hole, an indication that these outfl...

X-rays from the First Massive Black Holes

X-ray studies of high-redshift (z > 4) active galaxies have advanced substantially over the past few years, largely due to results from the new generation of X-ray observatories. As of this writing X-ray emission has been detected from nearly 60 high-redshift active galaxies. This paper reviews the observational results and their implications for models of the first massive black holes, and it ...

Probing the Hard X–ray Properties of High-redshift Radio-quiet Quasars with Asca

This paper reports the X-ray spectral analysis of 5 high-redshift (z≥2) radio-quiet quasars observed by ASCA. A simple power law continuum plus cold Galactic absorption model well fits all the spectra (tipically between ∼ 2–30 keV in the sources frame). Neither the X–ray spectral hardening, attributed to a reflection component and observed in Seyfert galaxies, nor the excess absorption previous...

Massive star-formation rates of γ-ray burst host galaxies: An unobscured view in X-rays

The hard X-ray (2–10 keV) luminosity of a star-forming galaxy tracks its population of high mass X-ray binaries and is essentially unobscured. It is therefore a practically unbiased measure of star-formation in the host galaxies of γ-ray bursts (GRBs). Using recent and archival observations of GRBs with the XMM-Newton and Chandra X-ray observatories, limits are placed on the underlying X-ray em...

The 1 Ms Chandra Survey of the HDF - N : Populations at the Faintest X - ray Fluxes

The Chandra Deep Field-North survey, which has at its center the Hubble Deep Field-North, has reached an exposure of 1 Ms and is now available to the public for analysis. This great astronomical resource will soon be released to the community in the form of a catalog paper with accurate X-ray fluxes in four bands and astrometry good to ≈ 0.6 ′′ –1.2 ′′ over the entire ACIS-I field. The scientif...
